Make your own ride
For the past 13 years, this five-day immersive workshop has given people the chance to build their own wooden surfboard from start to finish. Below you’ll find photos of the process, available dates, and everything you need to know. Spaces are limited so book early to secure your place.
About wooden surfboard workshop
2026 will mark the 13th consecutive year of running wooden surfboard workshops, making this one of the longest running workshop products on the planet and one of the very few places where you can join a guided programme taking you through the process of making your own hollow wooden surfboard starting with a pile of planks through to the shaped wooden surfboard. Hundreds of people have done the workshop since its inception.
The five-day workshop is about the magic of seeing a pile of planks transform into a one-of-a-kind work of art that can be surfed – and knowing that it was your hands and hard work that created it. In building your surfboard you’ll also learn about the different types of timber and how to get the best out of them, the environmental aspects of wooden surfboards, the history behind wooden surfboards, and design dynamics like rocker, rails and fin configurations.
It’s not essential that you have DIY or woodworking experience, and Pat is on hand to assist whenever it is necessary. Both ladies and gents are welcome. It goes without saying that you must be prepared to do the work.
You can book online or by emailing Patrick on burnett.patrick@gmail.com.
If booking online, you can use the calendar visible below the surfboard shape that you choose in the shop to book your dates. Simply click on the dates that suit you and follow the steps. You will receive a confirmation email and Patrick will be in touch with you by email to finalise details.
If dates on the calendar are not clickable, it means those dates are not available.
Workshop venue
All workshops, unless otherwise arranged, will take place in my Scarborough workshop. My workshop is on the property of Good Hope Gardens Nursery on the edge of the Cape Point Nature Reserve. It’s a stunning natural environment surrounded by mountains and wild vegetation, and close to the best surf spots the Cape Peninsula has to offer. It’s a peaceful and relaxing environment to work and build surfboards.
